GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

At Confirmation, the Holy Spirit imparts on the believer seven specific gifts enabling them to live up to Jesus’ expectations. The gifts enable us believers to go beyond our limitations, to reach our maximum potential, and consequently make a difference in the world.

At Confirmation, Jesus shares the same Spirit that came upon and his transforming ability that Isaiah prophesied when he said, “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of courage, the Spirit of the knowledge and devotion to the LORD— and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.” (Isaiah 11:1-3)

The seven gifts are the following:

1.    WISDOM (Balance) - The ability to live a balanced life that desires to be strong in body, mind, and soul.

2.    KNOWLEDGE (Self-Awareness) - The ability to know the truth about God, others, and yourself.

3.    UNDERSTANDING (Insight) - The ability to see purpose in everything, including suffering, as leading to one’s salvation and the salvation of the world.

4.    COURAGE (Fortitude) – The ability to overcome the limitations of fear and evil in order to do what is right.

5.    COUNSEL (Right Judgment) - The ability to making right decisions, especially in complex situations.

6.    PIETY (Devotion, Reverence) - The ability to practically live a life of faith, hope, and love.

7.    FEAR OF THE LORD (Wonder and Awe) - The ability to see everything, including suffering, from the perspective of wonder and gratitude.
